Research shows that pupils with good school attendance records generally achieve better and enjoy school more. Having a good education will help to give your child the best possible start in life and having regular school attendance patterns can also encourage the development of other responsible patterns of behaviour including independence and life skills. Furthermore, a child who does not attend school regularly will be unlikely to keep up with the work and will miss essential learning which helps to build their knowledge and skills. So, the more a pupil misses school, the lower their academic outcomes will be which can then lead to them wanting to be in school even less.
With this in mind, we have been working hard to develop our schoolʼs attendance procedures to allow the children to have the best possible start in life. This means that over the coming days if your childʼs attendance in below 95%, you may receive a phone call from your childʼs class teacher or, if below 90%, a letter from the school, looking at ways that we can support you and your child to attend school more.
Parents are expected to:
Ensure their child attends every day the school is open except when a statutory reason applies.
Notify the school as soon as possible when their child has to be unexpectedly absent (e.g.sickness).
Only request leave of absence in exceptional circumstances and do so in advance. Book any medical appointments around the school day where possible.
School are expected to:
Have a clear school attendance policy on the school website which all staff, pupils and parents understand.
Develop and maintain a whole school culture that promotes the benefits of good attendance.
Accurately complete admission and attendance registers.
Have robust daily processes to follow up absence.
Have a dedicated senior leader with overall responsibility for championing and improving attendance.
