• Welcome
    to Year 3
  • Emerald Class

Welcome to Year 3! Here we start our journey in the juniors, where the children will continue to grow their independence. We have an exciting year planned, and we cannot wait to get started with you all. In line with our SHINE motto ‘Learn Together, Shine Forever’, we have chosen gemstone names for each class. In Year 3, we are known as the gemstone Topaz.

A typical day in Year 3:

We have our core lessons in the morning which start with a half an hour whole class reading session (9 – 9:30), followed by a 15-minute assembly, then an hour for our English lesson (9:45 – 10:45), then breaktime. From 11am until 12:15, it’s Maths, including fluency/mental Maths. Lunch is 12:15 – 1:15 and our afternoons include reading for pleasure time followed by our theme (encompassing Science, History, Geography, Art and D&T) twice a week and PSHE & PE Thursday afternoons. We have a session of computing or music (depending on the term) every week, plus RE and French. For music this term, Year 3 have an exciting opportunity to take part in a weekly singing workshop led by Tewkesbury Abbey.

    Themes

Over the course of the year, we will be teaching three main themes. Within these themes, the children will be developing their knowledge, interests and skills to cover all of the curriculum areas. Additionally, our Ethos is rooted in our Christian values. These values permeate through our curriculum, behaviour and attitude toward one another.

    Home Learning & Reading

    • Reading every night - Children to bring in every day. Grown-ups, please sign and comment in their reading records at least once a week.
    • Maths - Maths.co.uk weekly quizzes online (logins in reading records)
    • English - A worksheet will be sent home weekly.

How else can you help your child at home?
Within Key Stage 2, your child will be expected to learn times tables. As a result of this, we will be focusing on our tables in lessons but also ask you to practice and support your children at home. We will be adding a range of web links and apps to Showbie that children can access at home to support them with their tables. Your child will also be learning topic related spellings every Friday. Children will be given a weekly spelling test the following Friday.

    PE days (routines/clothing expectations):

Your child will be doing P.E. on a Thursday and will need to come to school dressed in their PE kit, including trainers & pumps, shorts & joggers and an appropriate top with the colour matching the house they are in e.g. Rose house in a red top.

    Healthy snacks and water bottles:

Unlike in Y2, the school do not provide breaktime snacks for the children in Y3. As we are a healthy school, the children will only be allowed a healthy snack at break times. Snacks include fruit, vegetables, fruit bars, fruit pots and yogurt sticks. Please can you make sure the children bring in their own water bottles each day and take them home at the end of the day.

    Showbie (learning platform):

Our class code for you to access Showbie at home is: UJZC9

Please log into this at the earliest opportunity, as we will aim to use it to share messages, upload pictures of the children’s work and add links to websites that will benefit your child. Please ensure that you turn on the notifications so that you do not miss any important updates. Please don’t worry about the number of files and assignments that go onto Showbie as 90% of this is classroom related – it’s only the ‘HOMELEARNING’ file that will be of most use to you and your child at home. Any questions that you have can go into the ‘Questions’ folder. Your child’s log in username and password are the same for Showbie, AR Reader and Times table Rockstars (TTRS) – this will be at the front of their Reading Record.

    Parent helpers
If you are interested in volunteering at the school, listening to readers or sharing expertise for example, then we would love to hear from you. Please let the office know and we will do our best to make timings work for yourselves and the school.

Finally, if you have any questions, concerns or would like to speak to any member of the Year 3 team, we are available at the end of the day and will be more than happy to support you with anything that you need.

    Many thanks
