We are looking forward to a new and exciting year, welcoming back your child as they start their final year of Primary School. We hope that it will be a fulfilling, memorable and enjoyable year. In line with our SHINE motto ‘Learn Together, Shine Forever’, we have chosen gemstone names for each class. In Year 6, we are known as the gemstone Azurite.
Themes
Over the course of the year, we will be teaching foundation subjects through our R.E.A.L (Realistic Experiences for Active Learning) Curriculum lessons. These lessons will be creative, practical and support the children in learning knowledge as well as developing their skills and interests. Additionally, our Ethos is rooted in our Christian values. These values permeate through our curriculum, behaviour and attitude towards one another.

Healthy Snacks and Drinks
We are a healthy school and it is school policy that morning breaktime snacks are fruit, vegetables or a healthy snack (malt loaf, breadsticks etc). Your child should bring a named water bottle to school every day to keep them hydrated. These should be filled with water only.
Uniform expectations
Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct school uniform and appropriate shoes (no trainers). A polite reminder that children are only allowed to wear small, stud earrings and are not to wear nail varnish, acrylics or make up to school.
PE
In Year 6, PE takes place on Monday, childlren arrive in school dressed in their PE kit, which should include:
- Dark blue/black shorts or jogging bottoms
- Their coloured top (House team)
- Trainers
- Tape to cover stud earrings (if needed)
When we are completing PE outdoors in the winter months, children can layer up with a long-sleeved top under their house top.
Art & DT
In Year 6, we are passionate about ensuring many of our REAL Curriculum lessons are practical as our mornings can be quite heavy! We complete plenty of Art & DT lessons throughout the year. Please can children bring in an old shirt/ art apron and cookery apron (if they have one) to store in their lockers
Home Learning
Reading
Studies show that reading frequently develops communication skills, expands vocabulary, increases creativity and imagination and has a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. The only thing that can help a child to improve at reading is to practise reading!
At C of E, we ask that pupils read at least 4-5 times a week for approximately 20 minutes each time. Reading records should be handed in on Fridays.
Maths
Homework
Children will receive Maths homework which will include a range of questions to keep children’s fluency and recall skills up to date. The maths homework will be found on maths.co.uk and your child should have their own login details. Homework goes out on a Friday to be collected the following Wednesday.
English
This year, your child will complete a ’10 Minute Weekly Workout’ which will support them in preparing for their SATs in May. These questions will test their knowledge of KS2 grammar and punctuation and should take no longer than 10/15 minutes to complete.
Spellings
We will no longer be completing spelling tests; however, we may stick spellings into your child’s reading record so you are aware of what we are covering in class. You may choose to practise these with your child.
Maths and English homework will be handed out on Fridays and should be returned the following Wednesday.
Our Partnership with Parents
We value our links with parents and aim to create strong communication between school and home.
Ways we achieve this:
Showbie – We use an online learning platform. The class code to access your child’s learning is V4K3M.
REAL Curriculum- We are always looking to invite parents, grandparents and other relatives into our REAL Curriculum lessons. We have previously invited parents to join us in our World War II cookery lessons; Make Do & Mend sessions (sewing) and electronic board game lessons. If you have any skills or hobbies, and are willing to share these, please speak to a member of staff.
Readers- If you have a spare hour (or two!) and would like to hear Year 6 children read, please speak with us.
SATs
Year 6 is a crucial year for your child as they will be taking part in the Key Stage Two SATs in the summer term.
As a Year 6 team, we aim to make this experience as positive as possible. We help the children to prepare for these tests by practising previous SATs papers throughout the year (instead of their usual assessments) so they are confident with the structure. We also work with the children to develop their resilience and confidence during PSHE sessions.
After Christmas, we will welcome you in to meet with the team and further discuss SATs.
