Statement of intent for Art and Design
Intent
Our aim, at Tewkesbury C of E Primary School, is to enable all of our pupils to become creative and reflective artists who are able to express themselves fluently and confidently in a variety of ways. Within our curriculum, we support our pupils in responding thoughtfully to different learning and stimuli in the role of a true artist. Throughout their time at Tewkesbury C of E, our pupils develop their cultural understanding and are exposed to capital cultural opportunities- this is prominent within the Art & Design curriculum we offer. As a school, we believe that Art & Design should be taught and celebrated as much as any other foundation subject.
Implementation
At Tewkesbury C of E, our teachers plan a structured sequence of lessons. Pupils are introduced to a range of artists, designers and architects throughout their time at C of E; each unit of Art begins with learning about an artist, designer or architect, their life and their work. In some years, due to studying more historical art (Egyptians/Romans), teachers will expose the pupils to the civilisation’s artwork. Pupils are encouraged to analyse the artwork, discuss their thoughts and record their ideas.
Our young artists will then learn techniques and skills which are detailed in our ‘progression grid.’ These skills are built upon either each year (developing ideas, drawing, painting and responding to art) or biennially (collage, sculpture, printing & texture, pattern, colour, line & tone). During subsequent lessons, after the artist’s study, ‘pupils will be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design’ (National Curriculum). During this time, our pupils are encouraged to develop their curiosity and creativity within their sketchbooks.
Finally, pupils are encouraged to use the techniques and skills they have learnt to create a piece of art. They may choose to create their artwork in the style of their selected artist.
Our bespoke Art and Design curriculum develops pupils’ interests and curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. We cover a wide range of artists, designers and architects from a range of periods of arts, cultures and nationalities, providing our pupils with a wider range of knowledge and understanding, both historically and culturally.
