Autumn Term – Friend or Foe?

Values: Peace and Hope

Throughout the Autumn term, children will take part in a wide variety of experiences to help them learn more about life during World War 2: evacuation, the blitz and air raids, propaganda, code breaking, espionage and rationing.

Spring Term – Lights! Camera! Action!

Values: Respect and Forgiveness

Throughout the Spring term, children will study the history of animation and develop skills in animation, film making, film direction and film production.

Summer Term – Ages Ago

Values: Community and Faith

Throughout the Summer term, children will travel back through time to experience life in the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. Children will discover how the culture, society and beliefs of these Britons affected life in Britain and use the rich history from these times to inspire their writing.

Resources For Parents

Through our themed-learning, children have been studying, researching and investigating the Battle of Britain and its importance as a turning point in British history. The children have watched video clips of the RAF from the 1940s, listened to radio broadcasts from the era that document dogfights as well as read first hand accounts from pilots. Following on from this, children then stepped into the shoes of either a WW2 RAF pilot or an eyewitness stood on the cliffs of Dover looking out over the English Channel to write a first person recount of this historic event. Below is a small sample of the excellent work produced by children in Year 6.

Home Learning in Year 6

Each week children will be required to complete a short series of Maths problems that encourage them to use a variety of their Maths skills. When completing Maths tasks, children should be encouraged to show their workings.
Maths home learning will be set on a Friday and due on a Wednesday.

Each week children will be required to read a short text and answer questions about the text that show their understanding and develop their comprehension skills. When completing English tasks, children should be encouraged write in full sentences.
English home learning will be set on a Wednesday and due on a Monday.

Children should be encouraged to read as often as possible and for a sustained period of time; we recommend a minimum of 20 minutes per day of engaged reading time.

Times Tables

It is expected that children practice their times tables as often as possible and we would encourage the use of tablet apps and games to assist with this, especially DoodleMaths and DoodleTables.

Children will receive a spelling test each Friday. Within that spelling test, the children will be randomly tested on a selection of words from the KS2 statutory spelling lists. Additional words will also be selected from the National Curriculum statutory spelling requirements. We would encourage parents assist children with learning and practicing the KS2 Statutory Spellings by breaking them into manageable chunks. There are many tablet apps and games that can be used to assist with learning and practicing spellings, especially DoodleSpell.
