Year group information
Welcome to Reception. This page will contain all the information you need to have for a successful first year at Tewkesbury C of E Primary School.
P.E is on Thursday morning for Class 1 and Class 2.
Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school and that items are clearly labelled.
Your child needs to have a white t-shirt with black or navy shorts. Your child will not require plimsolls until the Summer term.
What is ‘Welly Boot’ Day?
Children will have the opportunity to take part in Welly Boot sessions once a week. These sessions are timetabled outdoor sessions, where the children will have the opportunity to explore the outside space. This is separate to the children’s daily experience of their Foundation Stage outside classroom. Welly boot is an opportunity for your child to experience nature and the outdoors in all weathers in a safe, secure environment. The main focus for these sessions will be in the Keystage 2 outside area at the back of their playground.
Our Welly boot experiences aim to:
- develop speaking and listening skills
- extend children’s learning through real life experience and exploration
- improve their confidence, independence and self esteem
- to provide enjoyable and rewarding challenges
- develop children’s teamwork, cooperative skills and awareness of the needs of others
- to enable children to be self-motivated, make choices and initiate their own learning
- to help children understand, appreciate and care for the natural environment.
Children will be supplied with a waterproof jacket and trousers, which will protect their school clothes.
Children should have their own wellies for these sessions. These should be named and kept in school throughout the week. A spare pair of socks (also named) would be useful and can be kept in your child’s PE kit.
In the colder weather, hats, scarves and gloves are essential as is a sun hat in the warmer summer months. Children will be required to wear their wet weather trousers throughout the whole year during these sessions.

Wednesday 26th Sept-Reception children all in AM Finish at 12pm
Thursday 27th Sept – Reception children all in AM and stay for lunch. Finish at 1.30pm
Thurs 27th Sept – Tapestry Workshop at 9.15am
Friday 28th Sept – Reception children in Full time. Please note: Evacuation drill @ 2pm

A great website for children to watch how the letter shapes are formed.
- Twinkl Phonics Suite
The Twinkl phonics App is designed to support children in developing some of the key skills taught in Phases 1-5 of the DfES Letters and Sounds Document. Activities are presented in a fun, child friendly way and covers the following:
- The sounds and names of each letter of the alphabet.
- Letter formation.
- Blending sounds in CVC words.
- The graphemes taught in phases 2-3 (including digraphs and trigraphs).
- Initial and final blends.
- Alternative spellings for phonemes.
- High frequency and tricky words for each phase.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices and needs to be purchased. This app covers each of the different phases and is a good investment to support your child through their phonic journey.
Autumn 1: Week 2
Our first week in school!
This week we have been very busy in Reception getting to know our classroom and school environment but most importantly making lots of new friends!
We have had lots of fun learning our school routines and playing together indoors and in our outdoor classroom. We have explored the whole school to find out where everybody is and what jobs they do.
We have been painting our portraits!
We spent time looking in the mirror and noticing our features. We looked at our friends in the class and we talked about our similarities and differences!
We have also been talking about what makes us special and we have found out about some of the things we all like and dislike.
