Year 6 evacuation day experience

Yesterday, pupils from Year 6 in were – in support of their theme lesson – whisked back to 1940s Britain and were duly evacuated to the safety of Winchcombe.

They experienced a steam train journey, met with other real evacuees and even had to seek shelter during an air raid. They were also trained to be members of ‘fire parties’ ready to put out any fires after a bombing raid. Finally it was time to head back to the future.

Our brains are growing!

The whole school took part in a “Week of Inspirational Maths” last week, which taught us lots of new ideas about how to make our brains grow in Maths lessons. Did you know that making mistakes makes your brain grow? If you think you “can’t do” Maths, think again because we now know that no-one is born without a Maths brain. We also found out that finding Maths hard makes your brain grow even more than finding it easy. Fascinating! Here are a few of the activities that went on throughout our inspirational week.

Year 2’s Victorian School Day!

On Friday, Year 2 were transformed into Victorian children for the day. Even the teachers and classrooms looked Victorian. The children learnt about strict Victorian teachers and their punishments as well as taking part in lessons such as textiles, country dancing, woodwork, arithmetic and handwriting – on a chalk board of course! What a fantastic time we had!

News

The children have settled into their new classes and year groups exceedingly well this week. Our new Reception class children are exploring all corners of the school. The new approach to maths has the children buzzing. This morning Year 2 went back in time dressed as Victorian children. The school looked very different in their classrooms.

Evacuation Day- Friday 29th September

As part of our Health and Safety Major Incident Policy we now have an annual evacuation drill. This will be on Friday 29th September . This means that there will be no after school clubs and no after school care provision.  We will send every parent a text when the drill starts. All parents will receive a text message indicating the start of the evacuation drill and to collect their child. The children must be collected from Holy Trinity church.  The text will be sent between 2.00pm – 2.30pm. As part of the process every child has to be signed out to a responsible adult/parent. This year the school admin staff have organised the signing out procedures alphabetically so that parents need only go to one sign out station. Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. As in previous years we aim to make this efficient and non-threatening to the children. Most children are familiar with Holy Trinity and they watch a video until collected. The children view this as a big adventure which is good I the event that this is a real procedure. If you have any questions relating to the Evacuation Day please feel free to contact me.

News

Welcome back after what I hope has been a good summer holidays for everyone. Thank you for your continuing support with school uniform. They all looked very smart indeed. The children have been sharing their holiday travels and experiences with us, they certainly have enjoyed themselves. During the break substantial work has been carried out both outside and inside the school. We have a new library room with a bespoke electronic scaling system that quizzes the children on each book they read and sets their next challenging book. Our PE store and resources have been relocated and audited giving the children more equipment to use during playtimes. We launched a Singapore Maths scheme throughout the school this week. It is particularly credited for inspiring children with the ‘Can Do’ approach, relating not just to maths but to all learning and life challenges. The children are enjoying the changed approached. All in all it has been a lovely positive start to the academic year.

Staff News
