Menu week 1 (Dinner Menu for September on website)

Whilst it is very exciting time leading to the summer holidays it is also a time for reflection on the academic year. Last September we welcomed five new members of staff as well as a new Reception year. I can say without hesitation that those staff members are now part of the the school fabric and the Reception children are ready to take up the role of Year 1 warriors! Our year 6 will take the final walk on Friday as they too are ready for the next stage of their education journey. They are a year group that over the years have triumphed in Sport, Drama, Choir, Maths competitions, Fund raising and high achievement in academic learning.   These children will be moving onto various high schools; Tewkesbury Comp, Sir Thomas Rich’s, Pates, The Crypt, Hanley Castle, Cleeve School. They have taken full advantage of all the things uniquely offered by this school. Behind this year group has been a team of dedicated staff from the ladies in the front office, IT, kitchen staff, lunchtime supervisors, grounds and premises staff, teaching assistants and classroom teachers. All of whom together with the governors, I wish to thank for their hard work and dedication.

This year we also expanded our school to include a pre-school and community centre. The pre-school admission is from 2 years to 4 years with funded places available. From September it will be open all day. The incredible success and reputation is due to Mrs McMahon and her team. It is with pride that I see how the physical up keep of the community building and its usage reflects on the school.

The reputation of our school is fast growing beyond Tewkesbury town, particularly for our advanced technology, sporting success, behaviour, ethos, and now academic challenge.

For the next academic year we will be striving to improve on these achievements by working alongside parents. A lot has been said in the news about school budgets and the implications and we have not been immune to this. Reducing our swimming timetable is one such example and the cost of residential trips will increase.

We have also been very fortunate with the donations made to the school during the last year. These include school furniture, IT equipment and the plants and flowers at the Community Centre given by Tewkesbury Garden Centre.

I would like to take this opportunity in thanking parents on behalf of myself and staff for the many kind gifts and wish you all a lovely summer break and look forward to see you all at 8.50am on Wednesday 6th September 2017.

On Friday we will be saying farewell to Mrs Ashforth who is retiring after 45 years in teaching. She has been with this school for 14 years and will be missed by both the children and staff. Also leaving is Mrs Louise Tolley as she moves away to settle in Wales. Mrs Tolley has been at the school for 5 years in two roles as lunchtime supervisor and teaching assistant. Mrs Lewis left us on Friday to start her maternity leave. Baby Lewis is due at the start of August. Finally Miss Moore is leaving to take up a full time teaching position at a school in Gloucester. We wish them all every success in the future.

Sports Day

Regrettably our sports day was cancelled due to the weather and the grass being extremely slippy underfoot. We tried to communicate in advance the possibility of postponement to parents. I feel the media coverage regarding the weather overnight prepared most parents. As parents you need to have full confidence in me to make the right decision not to put your children at risk whether in school or on an out of school activity. On Tuesday afternoon parents were given a text informing them that decision would be made early Wednesday morning. On Wednesday I came into work at 7.00am (heavy rain) to check the field and to give parents notice about sports day. At 8.00am the decision was made to notify parents. Many parents, although disappointed, had expected the decision. Some parents took the opportunity to have lunch with their children which was lovely.

On the children’s return can you please ensure that EVERY item of uniform is labelled with your child’s name clearly visible. You will see from recent weeks the colossal amount of unmarked uniform we have uncollected.

After school Clubs

A new list of clubs will be sent out on our return in September for the children to sign up to.

The school office will be closed at 1.30pm until after the Y6 children have exited. Parents are asked to keep this area up to the island free. This area will be coned off. The side pedestrian gate will also be closed. Can all parents use the main top pedestrian entrance.  Year 5 children will be escorted onto the front playground where parents can meet them.
School Lunches
Next week we will be serving brown bag menu ALL week. This is to allow the kitchen the opportunity to deep clean before the holidays.
Sports Day
A reminder that sports day is on Wednesday 19th July from 9.30am to 12.00 midday. The morning is divided into two halves; the traditional Kiwi Games where the children compete in a course of fun games . Parents are encouraged to support their children at these game stations, and the traditional competitive races.
KS1 (Reception classes, Years 1 & 2)  will start their competitive races at 9.30am on the school field. Then from 10.45am their Kiwi games will be held on the front playground.
KS2 (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) will start their Kiwi games at 9.30am and will be held on the back play ground. Their competitive races will start at 10.45 am on the field.
A program of events will be made available on the day so that parents can keep track of their child/ren events.
The school will provide drinks for the children .
A reminder to parents not to approach the children during the morning please as this makes it very challenging to supervise the children safely.
At 12.00 midday we invite you to stay on the field and have your picnic lunch with your child/ren. Those children who have ordered a brown bag meal will collect it from the hall and will return outside to join parents. Please do not accompany your child into the hall as there is insufficient space. At 1.00pm the children will return back into school. On Thursday during our assembly the children will be told which was the winning house and those children will be presented with their medals. Please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school. Year 6 children to bring their school uniform into school to change into for the Abbey Leavers Service in the afternoon.

Cool Aeronautics

Cool Aeronautics

On Friday 30th June a small group of Year 6 pupils attended the Cool Aeronautics 2017 event at the Jet Age Museum in Gloucester.

The day was broken into a succession of fast moving talks, events and activities aimed at introducing children to aviation and engineering. During the morning, children learned about the history of flight and Gloucestershire’s long association with aeronautics. They t

hen toured the museum and enjoyed sitting in the cockpits of a Hawker Hunter fighter and Hawker Siddeley Trident airliner.

Across the afternoon, the group participated in a series of hands-on tasks. The undoubted highlight of these was the construction challenge organised by Safran Landing Systems. Despite being considerably outnumbered by children from other schools, Jessica Paginton, Sophie Paginton, Jacob Lutton and Niamh Brady produced easily the day’s quickest time (12 seconds) for assembling a replica of an Airbus liner’s landing gear.

All of the children enjoyed a fantastic day of learning at Cool Aeronautics and returned to school laden with their jelly bean prizes from Safran Landing Systems!
