News
It has been a very busy week for all of the children . We started on Monday by seeing off the Year 4 children to their Pioneer residential in Shropshire. They had three glorious days of weather and were able to make the most of the activities available that included raft building, caving, campfire sing alongs, high wire and abseiling. The children were an absolute credit to us and their parents as staff were complimented on their behaviour and in particular – team spirit on encouraging one another to have a go and then celebrated when small mile stones were achieved.
KS1 SATs
Our Year 2 children are coming to an end of two weeks of statutory assessments and this afternoon Mr Rylatt and Miss Armstrong celebrated with them by having a picnic on the field. Again every child tried their best and really enjoyed going to our new Community Centre with Mr Rylatt and Miss Armstrong for their assessments.
During Wednesday afternoon we held our first Children’s Party Fayre in the Community Centre. There were many entertainers exhibiting along with the schools catering team. If you were unable to attended don’t dismay as will be holding another event very soon. If you are interested in hiring the rooms for a social/business event details can be obtained from the school office, website or facebook page.
Year 6
On Wednesday 7th June our Year 6 pupils have been invited to join with other year 6 pupils from around the county in a special leavers service at Gloucester Cathedral. This is only for the children and it is in addition to the service held at Tewkesbury Abbey. The Abbey service is on Wednesday 19th July at 2.00pm and parents and families of the Year 6 children are invited to join us.
Hot Weather
Can I remind parents that on the rare occasion that we have very hot weather forcasted that the children bring a sunhat to school and that suncream is applied at home. If you feel that your child would need a further application during the day you are welcome to come into school and apply or your child can bring the cream into school and apply it themselves.

Y6 Stone Age launch day

Special report by Ruby Wilson, Layla Watts and Olivia-Paige Chafer

On Thursday 18th May, Y6 had their launch day. It was about Cave men/women and how they would have survived in the Stone Age. We got dressed up and acted like we would’ve then for the whole day. The day was really interesting.

In the morning, we went outside and were put into tribes and were told to come up with a tribal name and to put this on our banners. The tribal names were:

  • The Scorpions
  • The Meat Batterers
  • The Cave of Legends
  • The Bone Crunchers.

We also had to perform a tribal dance to help identify ourselves.

After break, we had to do four different activities:

  • Cave painting
  • Making Fire
  • Hunting
  • Shelter making

With the cave painting, we sat in the ‘cave’ aka pirate ship and used charcoal to paint images of things from Stone Age times like people with spears and animals like mammoths and deer.

When we made fire we learnt to use flint to create a spark and light fires.

With hunting, Mr Swale taught us how hunt different Stone Age animals. For example with things living in trees we used a blow pipe, but with woolly mammoths we had to encircle the beast and surround it then use spears.

With shelter making we had to used natural materials to make a shelter, and be sure that we had a space to store carcasses from hunting.

We finished the day by doing some oral story telling, which was how they used to keep themselves entertained.

The day was inspiring and great fun. We look forward to learning more about our topic ‘Ages ago’.

News
This week has been very busy with the children getting stuck into their new summer term themes.
Reception classes and Year 3 had a visit from Bristol Zoo with some of their animals. The children got close up and personal with snakes and spiders.
Year 3 held a cake sale in the hall on Wednesday and raised £307.12 in aid of the Orangutan Foundation and The Air Ambulance. Well done Year 3 and thank you for your donations.
Year 4 are excitedly putting together the final touches for their residential trip, next week, to the Pioneer Centre.
Year 6 classrooms became ‘Bedrock City’ as they launched their theme day dressed as Cavemen and women. Most were delighted not to have to brush their hair for school.
With our school wide focused value of Community, Miss Armstrong has developed a link with a deprived school in Madagascar. As a result, we have been able to send some of the schools surplus books to the children there. They were extremely grateful and have been able to communicate their thanks to us for our donation and support. See our school website news page for further details.
Our Year 6 pupils were recently treated to a wonderful performance by the Watoto African Children’s Choir at our local Holy Trinity Church. Joining with other children from schools all around Tewkesbury, the children were dazzled by the high quality singing and dancing, as well as having the opportunity to join in. Congratulations to Harriet Gilder, who even won a prize for her dancing skills

PTFA

In recent years we have encouraged the new Reception parents to be part of the PTA (Parents and Teachers Association) for one year. This is to help our new parents feel part of the school community straight away. This summer we are extending the membership to all parents. It will now be known as the PTC (Parents and Teachers Committee). Mr Rylatt will be the new Chair of the PTC and Mrs S Tolley the Vice Chair. Meetings will be held on a Thursday, during the school day where possible or at the end of the school day.  The first meeting will be in June after the New Reception parents have had their welcome meeting. If you are interested in joining and working with Mr Rylatt and Mrs S Tolley on the PTC please complete and return an expression of interest slip below and they will be intouch. Historically the parents and school together have raised annually thousands of pounds that go to enhance the children’s experience and provision at school. This year the PTA have raised money for a new electronic reading scheme (£3,000) and the astro turf (£4,000) around the Pre-school play area. There is already plans in hand for the summer fete which will include the inflatables of last year.

Celebrations

We are delighted to announce that Miss Croome was married during the holiday break and is now Mrs Arnold. I am sure you will join me in wishing her and her husband every happiness for the future.

Caterpillar Music

Starting next Thursday at the school Community Centre is a new music club for babies and toddlers. Amazing fun, music, action songs, puppets, instruments and exciting activities will be had every week. The first session is free. To book your place, go to https://www.caterpillarmusic.com
