Today Mr Eveleigh’s Year 6 class led our morning collective worship. It was an inspiring way to start the day. The children spoke in their own words about the meaning of ‘Charity’ and explained with authority on a range of local, national and international charities. They set each class a different ‘charity’ challenge for the week. These included donating with a parent an item of clothing or toy to a charity shop in Tewkesbury. The worship was concluded with a Bible story about the old lady who gave her last coins to charity and apologised for not having more whilst the rich men gave large amount of money and bragged about how generous they had been. Jesus praised the old lady saying she had given the most because of the charity in her heart.

Last Friday I reported that our choir had set off for the 02 to perform with other school choirs. It was as predicted an amazing experience for both the children and their parents. It was a long and exhausting day as the children arrived back in Tewkesbury at a little after 1.00am. Thank you Miss J for organising the event and the staff members, (Mr Hibell, Mrs Sweeting, Mrs Buchanan and Mrs Wiggins) who gave up their own time to ensure the children went.

Today Mr Shaw’s Year 6 class led our morning collective worship. It was an inspiring way to start the day. The children spoke in their own words about the meaning of ‘Opinion’ and how people differ in their views. They illustrated this point by linking it to the American presidential election. The worship concluded with a video clip of the famous Martin Luther King speech ‘ I have a dream’

Our choir and their parents set off early this morning to join other school choirs to perform at the 02 Arena. It is an amazing opportunity for the children and one which the parents thoroughly enjoy too.

After School Clubs

Thank you for your co-operation this week when collecting the children from the Cascades car park. The residents have reported positively how the traffic congestion has been reduced. We are extremely fortunate that FREE parking is granted for 30 minutes in the morning and at the end of the day. Parking permits are available at the school office. There is NO FREE parking past 3.30pm. This is a fee paying car park and the school is not responsible for any parking fines for non-payment outside these times. I appreciate for some families attending multiple clubs this can have a financial impact. We are in communication with the borough council to extend the time period of free parking for our parents. However, until such times that an arrangement has been granted/agreed I would respectfully ask parents to pay for the parking beyond 3.30pm.

Uniform

Can I remind parents to have all items of uniform named. It was much easier to reunite lost items this week when named. Uniforms can be expensive and it is a particular frustration for both parents and staff when items are lost but when found have no name and so remain unclaimed. All unclaimed uniform has been bagged and sent to the charity Samara’s Appeal which will transport the clothing to refugees in Syria and Iraq.

We have had a very eventful week with year 1 pupils
dressing up as their favourite fairy tale characters. We had Kings, Queens, Princesses, Knights, Red Riding Hoods and children’s costumes. Thank you parents for supporting in this way. Years 5 & 6 experienced the Space Dome at scho
ol. The giant structure was erected in the school hall where the children could view the solar system, star constellation and galaxies. The dome has often been used on the BBC, Sky at Night series.

After School Clubs – Collection

It is with both sadness and dismay that I have to ask all parents to please note that from next Tuesday 17th January 2017, at the end of each club night, we will be walking the children to cascades car park for parents to co llect. We have had to make this decision because of the escalation of complaints from residents in Rope Walk and
Chance Street. Whilst increasing the number of clubs for our children to benefit from it has created an unforeseen social problem; vehicles left with their engines running
and unattended, residents subjected to verbal abuse and their drive ways obstructed, the children being narrowly missed as parents drive up the pavements and staff cars blocked in the school car park. We have to work in harmony with the school community and that involves being considerate to their quality of life.
This week I have met with the Parents Forum Group who represent every year group in the school and in consultation with them it was agreed to trial this approach. If it proves to be unsuccessful we may have to reduce the number of clubs on offer next term. To reiterate, all children attending after school activity clubs will be taken to the cascade car park by staff at 4.15pm and handed to parents/responsible adult. We will remain with thechildren for 10 minutes and those children not met will be returned to the school for collection. No child will be handed over on the school grounds as this will not address the parking issues. Parents not collecting their children on time will be asked to withdraw their child from the activity. Sadly if parents parked in Cascades and walked to the school to collect their children none of these incidents would have had occurred and this action would be unneccesary.

Lost Property – Clear Out

Next Tuesday 17th January, before and after school all the un-named lost property will be laid out in the hall for parents’ collection. Those items with pupils names in will be reunited with their owner during the school day. Any un-named items not collected on Tuesday, will be sold on and profits given to school funds. We are unable
to store such vast amounts of lost property.

INSET Day

A final reminder that Monday 16th January is an INSET day.

We start the New Year celebrating the wonderful presentation made to the school from the RNLI in recog
nition of theschools charitable donations. Over the past 26 years pupil and staff from the school have enjoyed the Year 6 annualresidential trip to the Isle of Wight. As part of the experience the Year 6 children fund raise at school and personally hand their donation to the RNLI at Bembridge station, Isle of Wight. We have over the years received plaques and certificates in recognition, this year however the RNLI specially commissioned a trophy sculpted in the shape of a
boat rudder. It is in every sense a unique award. It was calculated that the school had donated in excess of £20,000 during this time enabling the life guard station to purchase essential lifesaving equipment. The trophy is on view in the school office.

We have this week sent home data collection sheets for each child, please complete the highlighted areas and return to the school office no later than 11th January.

Esafety- iPhones
Earlier in the week I sent a letter to the parents of Year 5&6 children regarding cyber bullying and using iPhones responsibly. Co-incidentially this has been a national news item highlighting how vulnerable children are on social media programs. Parents face mounting pressures to give their children a mobile phone sooner than they would prefer. In some cases children as young as 5 have a mobile phone. It is quite common practice for Year6 children to be given a phone ready for their transition to high school. Many mobile phones are now iPhones and that brings it
both amazing opportunities but also responsibility.
Our school website has links to websites that can advise parents on how to monitor and support their child using the internet/iPhones/social media sites. Click here.
