newsletterNews

We started the week with the news that the school is being presented with a prestigious award from the RNLI Bambridge, Isle of Wight. It is in recognition of funds raised and donated by the school over the last 20 years. This has been in excess of £15,000.00. The money has been traditionally raised by the year 6 children before they have gone on their residential to I.O.W. This award is exceptional as they have never presented it before.

The Year 3 children together with staff and parents visited Bristol Docks where they spent time aboard ‘The Matthew’. They experienced what life was life as a sailor and as a slave in the cramp conditions. Afterwards they were led by ‘Pirate Pete’ along a pirates trail in the docks. Their behaviour was exemplary and it is always a pleasure to receive messages about our children’s conduct on out of school activities.

Y6 trip to a Synagogue in Cheltenham gave the children an insight into other places of worship. They were able to ask delving questions about tradition and practices.

Year 4 represented the school in a maths tournament in Cheltenham last week. They competed against a number of private and prep schools. I am extremely proud to announce that they took first place overall, an amazing achievement. The team were Ollie Gleeson, Owain Pass, Eva Gabb and Harvey Fell well done!

School Photographs

Can all school photograph orders be returned by Monday 21st November.

Children in Need

Amelie Thompson and Maddie James raised an impressive £96.40 through raffling two Pudsey bears, congratulations to them both. Ticket winners were Alex & Eleanor Walker and Morgan Exeter. Donations from ‘ wear what you want’ day raised a further £258.58.

Crossing Patrol Warden Vacancy

We have a vacancy for a crossing patrol warden if you are interested please speak to the office for further details.

After School Club Parking

A reminder please that the staff car park should not be used by parents picking up from after school clubs. Last Tuesday evening was particularly overwhelming and dangerous as children who walk alone had to navigate the ‘Wacky Races’ scene in the car park. I will be leaving the gates locked on Tuesdays to prevent this happening again. We are only considering the safety and welfare of your children.

Parents Evening – Email Addresses

To further improve our communications with parents we will be trialling emailing the weekly newsletters. For this to happen parents are being invited to upload their email addresses onto the school laptop that will be displayed in the school hall on both parent evenings. Once this information is collated we will start to circulate the newsletters this way and also on the school website and there is always a few paper copies in the main entrance.

Christmas Gifts – Additional News!

Further to last weeks news about the parent Christmas Gifts the PFTA secured an amazing purchasing deal which is now being passed down to the children. The cost of the presents will now be just £2 each. For the last two years the PTFA have sold ‘parent gifts’ to the children at a small cost. The gifts have been excellent value for money and the children have really enjoyed decorating the gift bags, choosing individual gifts and hiding them at home until the big day. This year the gifts will be sold on Friday 25th November throughout the day. If you would like your child to buy a gift for either parent or both please send your child in with the £2 (in an envelope) per gift on Friday 25th November.

A reminder for Parent Prayer Group

We are looking into the possibility of setting up a Tewkesbury Primary School Parent Prayer Group. If you feel this is something you would be interested in, please contact the school office.

Our pre-school is increasing weekly with new children joining. We have Free Funded places available for all 2, 3 and 4 year olds. Year 1 learn about Remembrance day

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day and why it is important. We learnt all about the poppy and why it is an important symbol on Remembrance Day. We listened to the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, a poem written by a soldier fighting in the First World War. As we listened to the poem imagined seeing poppies growing in the fields and we thought about all the soldiers who were fighting for peace.

We learnt on the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month we pay our respects to the soldiers who have fallen since the First World War. We showed our respects by completing a two minute silence at 11 o’clock with our peers and those around the country.

We also made poppies on crossed and planted them into the ground. We took a moment to think about our value peace and how the soldiers had fought for our country to be at peace with other countries.

Some of us also chose to paint pictures of poppy fields

Remembrance

Our service was led by Year 6 who all wrote and read their own remembrance poems. It was very moving to listen to young persons reflect on loss. They then led the whole school in laying individual poppy crosses around our flag pole. Parents are very welcome to lay a poppy also. The poppies are available from the school office. Members of the local community joined us in our service.

Parents Evening Appointment

From Tuesday next week the parents evening appointment boards will be in the main entrance for you to select an appointment time. For those parents not able to come into school to select a time please telephone the office and an appointment will be made for you. The school, parent partnership does require a parent/guardian or representative attend these meetings.

An Autumn progress report will be sent out before your appointment so that you can discuss this with the class teacher. A reminder to new parents that appointments are 10mins and we have a system whereby the next parent knocks on the classroom door indicating their arrival. If you think that you may need more than 10 mins to discuss your child’s progress please arrange through the office an after school appointment. I would urge parents to be considerate of other parents and to keep to the time allocated. It can have a knock on effect when a parent has more than one teacher to see. Thank you.

Learning about fireworks

This week we have been talking all about fireworks.

We talked to our chatty chum, sharing our own experiences of fireworks and why we do or do not like them! Some of us love the bright colours and the glittery sparkles in the sky, but some of us also think that fireworks can be too loud!

To learn about fireworks we have been listening to the history behind why we have this special celebration on the 5th of November. We learnt all about Guy Fawkes and his terrible plan.

In our literacy learning we have been thinking of lots of ways to describe fireworks and we have been labelling pictures using our phonic sounds to help us.

We have also been learning lots of songs, rhymes and poems about firework.

In our Maths learning we have been thinking about 1 less than a number and how to take away amounts. To do this we sang a number rhyme to help us and we talked about how many fireworks would be left each time. We have also been doing lots of counting, especially backwards from 10!

We went out on welly boot altogether this week and had a very special treat!

We played a game of hide and seek and then we sang one of our favourite firework songs!

Here it is:

Once we had finished our song we had a chocolate sparkler and some hot chocolate to warm us up! It was delicious!

Reception learn about Diwali

We started our new topic of Let’s Celebrate by learning all about the festival of Diwali. We learnt about why the Hindu faith celebrate Diwali and why it is so important to them. We also explored the different ways they celebrate this festival.

We had fun making our own Rangoli patterns. We did these by using coloured rice, chalks and using the shape tiles.

We went out on welly boot and worked as a team to make a class sized Rangoli pattern using the natural things we found outside. It was great fun working together and looking at the different colours to make our pattern.

Remember to have a look in our class galleries to see all the different things we have been up to!

Year 1 meet Tyrannosaurus Drip

This week we had a surprise visit from a dinosaur! The dinosaur was caught walking around the school grounds late on Wednesday evening by Mrs Scott. She managed to video the dinosaur walking around the playground and entrance into the school and we were able to show the year 1 children.

Unfortunately the dinosaur escaped so we looked closely at the image of the dinosaur, thought of some adjectives to describe it and created wanted posters. If you see the T-Rex wandering around Tewkesbury please contact us!
