Year 3 marvel at rocks and fossils

On Monday, Year 3 visited Bristol museum and the Clifton Observatory as part of their science unit – Rocks, Fossils and Soils. At the museum, children participated in a workshop that allowed them to handle and investigate a wide variety of rock types and fossils. As scientists, children asked and answered many questions that helped them develop their knowledge and understanding of the world that we live in. At the Clifton Observatory, children studied the formation of the Avon Gorge and the Giant’s Cave. Here, they looked at the effect that weathering and erosion has on rocks over time.

School Crossing Patrol

I am delighted to announce after further negotiation with the local authority that the school crossing patrol will be reinstated immediately but only until the end of the summer term. I would like to thank Mr Bovington and the local authority for their swift action. The situation will now be reviewed in the summer term. I will keep you informed of any updates. Mrs Tolley will be standing in temporarily until the new appointment has been made.

A reminder half term starts on Thursday 20th October next week. School will close at the normal time on Wednesday 19th October. School clubs will continue as normal. Parents consultation evenings next term are Wednesday 23rd November and Thursday 24th November from 3.30pm to 6.30pm

Lateness

On Thursday and Friday of this week we recorded 23 and 24 children respectively, arriving late after the school bell. The school day starts at 8.50am and this is when the children start lessons. Many of the children arriving late are missing their phonic lessons which will serious impair their progress in reading. Other children are missing times tables challenge and guided reading. We understand that very occasionally situations arise that result in a lateness but habitual lateness is damaging to the childrens learning. If you are experiencing these problems and would like some advice or support from school please ask to see Miss Black, SENDco.

Parent Prayer Group

We are looking into the possibility of setting up a Tewkesbury Primary School Parent Prayer Group. If you feel this is something you would be interested in, please contact the school office.

Our pre-school is increasing weekly with new children joining. We have Free Funded places available for all 2,3 and 4 year olds. New Chair of Governors

Firstly the school would like to acknowledge and thank Liz Williams for her chairmanship over the last 4 years. She has served on many of the committees and steered the governing body through an OFSTED and reconstitution. Liz has been instrumental in the appointment of new staff, supported many parents in challenging situations and has continually strived for the best education the school could achieve for all its pupils.

Our new Chair of Governors is Jonathan Handley, Jonathan has been a parent governor for 5 years and has driven the changes in the school grounds, premises and school lunches. He has also worked tiredlessly on the school budget to ensure we achieve value for money. Jonathan has the full support of the whole governning body in leading the school forward in its next chapter.

ISing POP-Concert

A very successful experience again. The children had a wonderful time at both performances but more so in the evening as the teachers really got into the swing of things.

Crossing Patrol

Further to my letter about the loss of the crossing patrol warden in Chance Street, the governors are composing a letter of objection on the grounds of safety to the local authority. I have also been approached by parents wishing to express their views too. I fully support both actions but in the meantime if parents can be extra vigilant when bringing the children to school, whether walking or by car. The dark nights are closing in.

E-Safety focus in Year 1

This week we have been learning about staying safe when online. We watched an e-safety video and discussed how we can stay safe when we are playing online with our iPads, tablets, parent’s phones or computers. We learnt not to share ‘personal information’ with people online. We designed some posters to help our friends and peers in school understand what personal information is. Look at our fantastic posters!
